Constructing a new pediatric wing that also serves as an emergency safe space during tornados

Securing Federal Grant Funding in a Competitive Landscape

In 2020, Shoreline secured $1 million in federal grant funding for PrairieStar Health Center. This funding opportunity from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) was for construction under the Capital Assistance for Disaster Response and Recovery Efforts (CADRE) grant. CADRE was a highly competitive funding opportunity to support facilities in areas readily impacted by natural disasters, such as tornado-prone Midwest areas. PrairieStar utilized these capital funds to support the construction of a new pediatric wing for the health center, which doubles as a safe space in the event of a tornado. Construction included exam rooms, a laboratory, a vaccine room, and a procedure room for medical procedures and integrated pediatric dental care. The space is outfitted with an independent electrical system, plumbing, internet service, data servers, and concrete, 12-inch thick walls that can withstand an EF5 tornado. In the event of a natural disaster that would incapacitate or destroy the PrairieStar facility, the CADRE build enables PrairieStar to continue operations on an emergency basis. When not used for emergency response, this beautiful new pediatric department creates a welcoming environment for children, teens, and their families.
